IEE Credential Evaluation: Requirements, Documents and Translations
What Is IEE?
International Education Evaluations (IEE) is a U.S.-based credential evaluation organization that evaluates foreign academic and vocational credentials and determines their educational equivalency in the United States.
IEE was founded in 1981 and provides evaluation services for education, employment, immigration, military service, professional licensing, nursing, and other purposes. IEE is also a member of NACES, the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.

What Types of Credential Evaluations Does IEE Offer?
IEE offers several report types depending on how the evaluation will be used. Applicants should confirm the required report with the institution, employer, licensing board, or other organization receiving the evaluation.
Document Report
A Document Report provides the U.S. educational equivalency of the foreign credentials submitted. It does not provide a detailed list of individual courses, credits, or GPA.
Document-level evaluations are commonly used when a detailed course analysis is not required.
Course Report
A Course Report, also known as a Course-by-Course Evaluation, includes the credential equivalency and provides a detailed analysis of academic coursework.
It may include:
- Individual courses
- U.S. semester credit equivalents
- U.S. grade equivalents
- Overall GPA, where applicable
IEE also offers additional report formats for education, immigration, military, nursing, accounting, teaching, and other professional licensing purposes.
What Documents Does IEE Require?
IEE documentation requirements vary by country, credential, and report type.
Depending on the applicant’s education, required records may include:
- Diploma or degree certificate
- Academic transcript
- Statement of marks
- Examination results
- Graduation confirmation
- Study certificate
- Other official academic records
For a completed university program, IEE generally requires evidence that the degree was awarded. A diploma or degree certificate may be required unless the transcript itself confirms that the degree was conferred.
IEE prefers transcripts to be sent directly by the issuing institution. Official evaluations for education, licensing, and employment generally require original transcripts or records sent by the institution. Uploaded scans may be used for certain provisional evaluations, but acceptance of a provisional report is determined by the receiving institution or agency.
Check the official IEE Documentation Requirements before submitting academic records.
Does IEE Require English Translations?
Yes. Academic documents that are not in English must be translated before IEE can evaluate them.
IEE’s FAQ states that documents not issued in English must be translated by a “Certified Translator.” IEE does not accept translations prepared by the applicant, a Notary Public acting as translator, or an uncertified translator. Translations prepared through a university in the applicant’s home country or by an embassy are generally acceptable under IEE’s published guidance.
The English translation accompanies the original-language document. It does not replace the original academic record.
Does IEE Provide Translation Services?
Yes. IEE offers translation as a separate service in addition to credential evaluation.
IEE describes its translation service as word-for-word translation into English. Translation and credential evaluation are separate services: a translation converts the content of a document into English, while a credential evaluation determines how the foreign education compares with the U.S. educational system.
Applicants may therefore arrange an acceptable translation before submitting their documents or use IEE’s own translation service.
Certified Translation of Academic Documents
Carolina Translation Center provides professional certified English translations of foreign academic documents, including:
- Diplomas
- Degree certificates
- Academic transcripts
- Mark sheets
- Examination certificates
- Graduation certificates
- Diploma supplements
- Grading scales
- Other educational records
Translations include the information appearing on the original document, including stamps, seals, signatures, tables, grades, handwritten entries, and other markings.
A Certification of Translation Accuracy is included with certified translations.
Because IEE publishes specific requirements concerning who may prepare translations, applicants should confirm that the translator and certification used for their application meet IEE’s current acceptance requirements before submission.

Official vs. Provisional IEE Evaluations
IEE distinguishes between official and provisional evaluations.
For official evaluations used for education, professional licensing, or employment, IEE generally requires original transcripts or records received directly from the issuing institution.
When only scans are available, IEE may issue a provisional evaluation in certain circumstances. The receiving school, employer, licensing board, or agency determines whether it will accept a provisional report.
IEE may also request additional records or verification during the evaluation process.
How Long Does an IEE Evaluation Take?
IEE currently states that an evaluation generally takes approximately 3 to 5 business days after the application, payment, and approved documentation have been received.
Expedited processing options may also be available. Missing documents, additional verification, or other application requirements can extend processing time.
Processing times can change, so applicants should check IEE directly before ordering.
