Certified Translation Services in the UK

If you are submitting documents to the UK Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), documents that are not in English or Welsh may need to be accompanied by a certified English translation.

A certified translation is a complete translation of a document accompanied by a written statement confirming that the translation is true and accurate.

Unlike some European countries, the UK does not operate a single national system of “sworn translators”. Instead, the organisation receiving the document determines what form of certification it requires.

For many UK government applications, the translation must identify the translator and include a statement of accuracy, the date of translation and contact information. Some organisations may impose additional requirements, so it is always important to check the rules of the receiving authority.

These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they do not mean exactly the same thing.

Certified translation
A translation accompanied by a signed statement confirming that it is a true and accurate translation of the original.

Notarised translation
A translation where the certification or translator’s signature is additionally notarised. Notarisation is not automatically required for every UK application.

Sworn translation
A term commonly used in countries that appoint or license sworn translators. The UK does not have an equivalent single national sworn-translator system.
